Bellingham Food Bank

  • Location: Bellingham, WA

The Food Bank purchased the adjoining property, allowing for a 40’ x 125’ expansion.  The primary expansion needs were in warehousing and product delivery.  The Bellingham Food Bank serves as a distribution center for all area food banks, including the San Juan Islands.  Therefore, the warehouse needed room for both incoming product, and palletized product ready for shipment.  Similarly, the distribution room for local citizens needed to be larger to accommodate increased use.

Zervas’ solution was to utilize the existing warehouse for incoming product, and create a new warehouse for shipping.  The new warehouse also accommodates a new walk-in refrigerator and freezer, dedicated for outgoing product.  A new second floor is used for palletized storage of dry goods.  In order to increase the amount of space for distribution of product locally, existing administrative areas were moved to a new second level in the existing building, and in the addition.

The warehousing loads on the second floor necessitated a concrete floor, supported by steel beams.  Exterior materials are masonry to match the existing building.  The building is designed to LEED Silver standards.
