James E. Zervas, AIA – Principal

Jim is a community builder. His devotion to both the natural and built environment as a cornerstone of civic vitality can be seen throughout Whatcom County in the form of the many outstanding buildings, parks and spaces for which he has been responsible throughout his career. Known for his gracious manner, Jim is a gifted architect and resolute ambassador for design who speaks with the wisdom and humor that comes with more than 50 years of practice. Jim established the Zervas Group in 1961.

Michael E. Smith, FAIA / Leed Accredited Professional – Principal

Optimistic, tireless and always aware of context -"In a museum I'll be the one looking at the ceiling, floor and walls instead of the art!" Mike's interest in architecture and the urban environment has had wide-ranging influence. Technically skilled and a strong client advocate, Mike's work is characterized by a can-do attitude and the drive to create designs that are buildable, right down to the smallest detail. He has been a partner since 1987.

Terry M. Brown, AIA / Leed Accredited Professional – Principal

A creative, big-picture thinker who also handles details with ease, Terry takes design seriously, and has fun doing it. While he brings a depth of experience in the planning and design of educational facilities, his sensitive approach to design is evident across a range of commercial and residential projects, whose timeless quality speaks to his commitment to excellence. He joined Zervas Group in 1990, and became a partner in 1997.

Sharon C. Robinson, AIA / Leed Accredited Professional – Principal

Sharon's dedication to making a difference in her community is embodied in a career focused on affordable housing, and ongoing involvement in a variety of service projects. Organized, tenacious and detail-oriented, she is a thoughtful designer who makes things happen. She joined the firm in 1991, and became a partner in 2001.

 

Staff

Chris Bigos – Associate

Chris is an accomplished designer with a technical proficiency that is matched by exceptional creative abilities. After a decade with Zervas Group, he takes on a large, complex commercial project as easily as he manages the design of a new home: with a thoughtful intensity that speaks to his belief in the power of design. Chris has studied in both Spain and Italy; he received a Bachelor of Arts from Hobart College in 1992 and a Master of Architecture from Washington University in 1995.

Sarah Brown

Expressive, knowledgeable and enthusiastic, Sarah is an imaginative designer with a flair for the creative use of materials. She travels widely and draws inspiration from architecture around the world. Clients appreciate the way her positive, collaborative attitude spurs projects forward. Sarah earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from Western Washington University and received a Master of Architecture from the University of British Columbia in 2003.

Jon Butcher

Jon comes to architecture by way of construction, where his experience is a tremendous asset whether he is working through the practicalities of an idea, coordinating consultant input or dealing with issues in the field. A highly motivated and conscientious designer, Jon has contributed to a variety of education, residential and commercial projects at Zervas Group, and is currently the Project Manager for Meridian High School.

Marc Griffin

A recent University of Oregon graduate, Marc brings a flair of creativity and inherit understanding of sustainable systems to all aspects of the design process.  His inquisitive nature is matched in his ability to think outside the box, and he brings a philosophical approach to the practice.  His adaptive use of technology is an asset to Zervas Group and he has become the go-to guy for architecturcal renderings.
